The Midwest Equine Dental Academy offers a unique and highly specialized apprenticeship training program. While overall medical care is the responsibility of the equine veterinarian, often these professionals have little time or energy available for dentistry. However, most veterinarians and horse professionals do recognize that many health-related problems can be alleviated with proper dental care.

Our highly qualified instructors will teach you the required skill to aide and improve the dental health of horses.

We provide advanced technique and methodology and work hard to ensure that you are up to date on the latest equine dentistry systems. You will learn professional equine related terminology and move on to have a completely hands-on experience with live horses.

Horse dentistry is our specialty. Whether you want to become an equine dental technician, add skilled dentistry to your vet practice, or add dentistry to your farrier or training business, we have the program for you!

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age upon commencement of the class.

Equine Dental Technician (EqDT)

After studying for and passing the MEDA Preliminary Qualifying Proficiency Exam, you will spend three consecutive weeks/120 hours of apprenticeship with live horses under supervision by a veterinarian and instructors.  Details about the exam will be available after you have completed the application form and been accepted by Dr. Hildebrand and his team.

A thorough introduction to the anatomy of the equine head, technical terminology, recognition of numeric tooth identification systems, problematic teeth and teeth patterns, non-surgical extractions and many other equine dental issues will be discussed.

You will learn about the various manual tools available, their application, and how to use each device for maximum efficiency.

You will also be taught professional ethics and how to conduct yourself in the field. And because we want you to become successful in your new role, we teach you the latest marketing skills and how to promote yourself once you complete your course.

After completion of our equine dentistry course, you will have the skill set and documentation to operate as an EqDT [Equine Dental Technician]. Your new skills will allow you to recognize dental malocclusions, execute point reductions, complete a full mouth balance, and perform as a professional in the field of equine dentistry.

The Midwest Equine Dental Academy offers specialized classes taught by some of the industry’s best professionals. Combined with over 20 live horses per student per course, our classes offer a very hands-on approach to learning. We pride ourselves in a very low student-to-instructor ratio and offer both a clinical training environment as well as offsite training, using the best and most up-to-date tools available.
